Becoming Nordic in Brazil: Whiteness and Icelandic Heritage in Brazilian Identity Making

In this article, we focus on whiteness as an historically shifting phenomenon by analysing Brazilian recent emphasis Icelandic ancestry, demonstrating the intersection of whiteness, class and ethnicity. A small group Icelanders were among millions migrating to Brazil around latter half nineteenth century. The migrants did not emphasise their identity but affiliated themselves with Germans other favoured immigrant groups. More than 130 years later, a Brazilians descent founded Iceland Association celebrate part ancestry. Since then, both membership interest in have grown. We ask how ancestry intersects increased reification ‘white’ identity. discussion shows that ethnic markers is new needs be understood within theorisation national racialised identity.
